Honest comparison

Aligners are not always the right answer.

Severe skeletal discrepancies, significant rotations of round teeth and some impacted canines are genuinely better with fixed braces or an orthodontist. We will tell you if yours is one of those.

Before you commit.

Will anyone notice I am wearing them?

At conversational distance, almost never. The attachments — small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth — are the more visible part, and they come off at the end. Expect a slight lisp for the first three or four days while your tongue adapts.

What happens if I do not wear them enough?

The teeth stop tracking the plan and the aligners stop fitting. Twenty-two hours a day is the real number — out for meals and brushing, in for everything else. If you miss the target we can usually recover with a mid-course refinement, but it adds months. This is the single biggest predictor of whether a case finishes on time.

Can I still drink coffee?

Water in, anything else out. Hot drinks warp the plastic and coffee stains it within days. Most patients settle into drinking coffee with the trays out over twenty minutes and then brushing — which, incidentally, is why many finish treatment with less staining than they started with.

Do I have to wear retainers forever?

Yes, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Teeth drift throughout life whether or not they were ever straightened. A fixed wire behind the lower front teeth plus a clear retainer worn at night is the standard here, and replacement retainers are $190 rather than a second course of treatment.
